Alonzo Clemons was born with brain damage in 1958. He was unable to speak and properly function, but found a way of expression through sculpting. He has an extremely rare condition called Savant Syndrome, in which someone with a brain disorder or brain damage acquires extraordinary skills beyond the average human. Clemons' sense of touch is so heightened that he can sculpt in darkness, relying on a sense of touch. He also has the ability to sculpt from memory, replicating an animal down to it's finest details just after looking at the animal itself for a mere 5 minutes. Clemons continues to sculpt today, and his most famous piece is "Frolicking Foals", a life size sculpture of three horses. His works have also sold for as high as $45,000.
Clemons' work inspires me because it is so realistic and accurate, and is focused on animals. It connects to my concentration of nature that, too, highlighted animals.
